| Phase 2:
Make your site inviting to search engines |
 |
 |
Page titles - Every page of
your site should have a relevant and specific title so it will be
properly indexed by the search engines.
|
 |
META tags & keywords -
This is information hidden to the viewer but readable by the search
engines. Think of the perfect, concise description of your business.
For keywords, come up with words or phrases that describe your page
content and your business. Include these on every page of your site,
not just the home page.
|
|
Submit your site - It's not
necessary to submit to every single search engine out there. The
most popular search engines are Yahoo, MSN and Google (with AOL
and Ask Jeeves trailing far behind). These few drive all the traffic
and deliver the best results for your time and money. There are
other search engines and directories that you should also consider
submitting to. Some are free, some charge for listings. It gets
confusing. Your web site developer should be able to explain the
ins and outs of paid versus free submissions.
|
 |
Relevant links - Think of any
industry related sites, affiliations or trade associations you belong
to. If they already include your general information on their site,
ask if they will add a link to your web site. If not, ask if they
will consider adding your information. Some search engines will
give a higher ranking to sites with more relevant incoming
links.
